2012 Harvest Report from Domaine Chanson
Low yields but exceptional quality
The 2012 vintage is the result of a very complicated and demanding year for the wine makers due to challenging weather conditions.
After a very cold winter and significant frosts in February, March saw very high temperatures which brought a fast bud break in the first days of April. Unlike March, April was gloomy and cold with two significant frosts which caused a lot of damage in the vineyards. The wet weather lasted throughout the whole flowering process bringing some disease. Two very violent hail storms in June made it even more difficult for the wine makers.
Fortunately, nice weather decided to settle at the beginning of August and the veraison started in plots with fewer grapes on the 12th of August and lasted around until the harvest with very hot temperatures in the second part of August.
One thing is certain, the bad weather conditions had the same effect on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the grapes were affected by millerandage and only the healthiest grapes were left on the vines.
The harvest started on the 17th of September at Domaine Chanson. When the grapes arrived at the winery we could confirm that the quality was there (healthy grapes, good maturity, good sugar level and acidity) however because of a limited number of grapes and significant millerandage the production was very small.
For the Pinot Noir grapes, the implementation of a new machine to cool the berries before ”encuvage” has played a decisive role in the winemaking, preserving the integrity of the grapes for the cold prefermentary maceration. As a result, the red wines are showing finesse, good freshness and depth.
Regarding the Chardonnays, the grapes were of high quality and slow pressing helped to collect the best juices. The wines are characterised by good balance and acidity that will soft en with time.
In summary; 2012 was an exhausting vintage for the wine makers but the final result reveals a lot of good surprises with both the red and white wines, however the volume will be very small, likely less than half the classic yield in Burgundy.
