The most serious hazard for wine is temperature fluctuation . Ideal wine storage temperature is between 10 and 15 degrees centigrade.

Light is also a danger as it can adversely affect the taste of wine.

Slight humidity helps the ageing of wine as it prevents the corks drying out. If the cork does dry out, the seal is no longer airtight and allows oxygen to get at the wine and may spoil your liquid investment.

Wine cellars (whether they be cellars or just a storage area) must be secure if you are going to put hard earned cash into a few cases of wine as well as conducive to proper ageing if you want to see a return on them.

The easiest way to store your wine is in our Bonded Cellar. This costs a few pounds a year per 12-bottle case but will provide peace of mind that your wine is being housed in ideal conditions. It also takes away the temptation of having a bottle when you are low on something for glugging and you can be sure you would regret it the next morning!

Our current Bonded Warehouse is located in Eaglescliffe in a former MOD building and as such, the wines lie in a perfectly cool and dark environment. Visits to the store can be arranged, particularly for those with wines in Bonded Reserve.

The added advantage of storing In Bond is that you do not have to pay Duty or VAT until you have the wine delivered. Duty will then be paid at the current rate as will VAT, but the VAT will be payable on your original purchase price.

If you wish to resell your wine to an overseas buyer straight from Bond you do not have to pay the Duty or VAT. A double bonus.

In May we issue a rental invoice for wines kept in Bond and this acts as your proof of ownership of your wines.

Rental charges are invoiced at £10 per case inclusive of VAT or part year thereof and include insurance at replacement value. For wines purchased from other suppliers but stored in our Bond, the price is £12 per case including VAT. Customers' reserves are stored separately from the company's stocks, they are recorded as such by the company who own the Bonded Warehouse and each case is marked with the customer's name and rotation number unique to each individual customer.
